- Description
- A wide variety of individuals in Australia and other countries are involved in grassroots activist movements that work to resist and challenge the ongoing effects of globalisation, capitalism, patriarchy, and other dimensions of power and inequality. These include explicitly anti-capitalist and environmental activist groups that often have a focus on ‘direct action’ protests and non-hierarchical organisational principles. Along with involvement in campaigns, activists often participate in the building of their own alternative communities based on the principles that underpin their activism, and seek to grow the connections and solidarity between activist groups, other marginalised groups, and wider society. The building of alternative communities and social support networks is important for maintaining and growing involvement while mitigating burnout. There is limited published work exploring how activism and community building practices interact with each other. While it would appear that activism and community building practices should work to support each other, there exist potential tensions between work focused primarily on activist campaigns and work focused more explicitly on building and supporting the activist community. This project involves situated insider sociological research. It draws on Bourdieusian and Assemblage theories to investigate the development of activist subjectivities through socialisation and practice, and explores the ways that activist and community practices are shaped through the relationships between the various human and non-human components of these alternative networks, as well as their relationships with the structures of wider society. The project is founded upon an identified lack of research into how all of these elements work together, particularly in the current Australian context.
